Myopia, often known as nearsightedness, results in trouble seeing things that are farther away. Often, myopia will become more severe as it progresses. This can lead to a higher risk of other eye problems developing.
Studies have shown that people who spend more time on up-close activities and less time outdoors may be more likely to develop this condition. With everyone focused on digital devices, it’s no wonder that myopia is one of the most common issues we treat at Vista Vision NJ.
Unfortunately, more and more children are developing myopia at younger ages. While the definitive cause of myopia has not been pinpointed, evidence shows that children who spend more time playing outside are less likely to be affected.
As a child becomes more nearsighted, they develop a greater risk of being affected by other major eye conditions. These include glaucoma, myopic degeneration, and retinal detachment.
There is no cure for myopia, but there are many different treatment strategies available. Vista Vision NJ is pleased to offer therapies such as orthokeratology, specialized soft multifocal contacts, and atropine, all of which are proven to manage, and even reduce myopia.
If your child is developing nearsightedness, it’s very important to slow the progression as soon as possible.
NaturalVue® is a type of multifocal contact lens used to control myopia. These contact lenses are 1-day disposables, making them convenient and hygienic for use by children. Multifocal contact lenses help control myopia by reducing eye strain. In some studies, multifocal lenses have reduced myopia progression by 25%.
In studies, atropine eye drops have been shown to effectively reduce the progression of myopia. Atropine works by relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanism, helping to reduce focusing fatigue. Eye strain or fatigue is a factor commonly associated with the progression of myopia.
